Vendor Spotlight: Bun Mese

Behind every great creation, there is that meticulous process of trial-and-error essential to sculpt the final product. The creators of Bun Mese demonstrate what it takes to create the perfect product as they take over the Sydney food scene to provide locals with the best Bahn Mi experience possible.

Since the beginning, Bun Mese has been gathering masses of media attention with their carefully hand-crafted Vietnamese pork rolls. Their success lies in the careful curation of every element of the pork roll: from the bun and everything in between, making sure it is made using only the freshest and highest quality ingredients. With many locals recognising Bun Mese as the best Bahn Mi in Sydney, co-founders Jada Vi and Johnny Tran continue to excel in providing an authentic and memorable Vietnamese experience.

Co-founder Jada Vi kindly shares a bit of her story and success:

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your background?

I’m from a corporate background, used to work at Qantas but I’ve always wanted to open my own business. My business partner Johnny Tran asked me if I wanted to open up a pork roll shop, I said only if we can do it better than what is already available. We both grew up eating pork rolls and love it, so it was easy to say yes! So I left my job and opened this shop. We spent a lot of time researching what was available in the market and just broke down every element of a pork roll, and we’ve come up with something we are really proud of. The whole idea was keeping it as traditional as we can, but making it better, in terms of ingredients, quality and range. We currently have 6 types of banh mis on our menu and believe they are all delicious! We’ve also had really great reviews so far and at the moment we are 96% on UrbanSpoon, so we are happy that we are on the right track 🙂

What first motivated you to start up a business in the food industry?

I’ve always wanted to start my own business but food is my passion, I love eating and before having my daughter I would always be on the look out for the next amazing restaurant. Now I still go out occasionally but to child friendly places that offers a quick service 🙂

What’s the meaning behind the name, ‘Bun Mese’?

It’s basically Vietna”mese” buns

What do you think makes your business unique?

We are offering a timeless classic, but have modernized and improved it. It is a great lunch for time poor people on the run. But being fast food doesn’t mean that it’s cheap and nasty, we want to offer a quick, yummy and healthy alternative to the traditional burger and chips which is also good value for money.

What do you hope to achieve with your business?

We hope to bring this food that we love so much to as many people as possible.

Were you always a chef? If not, what made you decide to change careers?

I was not always a chef, but I’ve always enjoyed cooking when I had the chance. The decision was easy as I’ve always wanted to have my own business and food was a no brainer.

What is your signature catering dish?

For catering, we love doing a variety of fresh rice paper rolls, and our signature baguettes.

You Chews partnered up with Bun Mese to provide some excellent, affordable packages for your next office lunch: from their signature Vietnamese rolls to their Vietnamese feast where you can have a little bit of everything! Your co-workers will thank you for it.
